Description

I’ve been working on this piece on and off for quite a while because of extra projects, and when I finally got a couple of days in-between things, I decided to wrap this piece up so that I can fully focus on my other projects for the upcoming weeks. I had some other plans for this piece to start off with, but it didn’t work out as I hoped as I would have to move away from the monochromatic look, which I kind of like.

Reference used for the girl.
Painted during 5-6 evenings in Photoshop CS2 with a Wacom Intuos tablet.

Some out-takes of the reference photo, sorry, but I'm not showing my gf like this on the internet, heh: http://www.henningludvigsen.com/images/counter_clockwise_reference.jpg

This is so beautiful, I really love this, my only problem is with the legs, they seem a little oddly proportioned or something to me. Maybe I'm just not used to the angle. Regardless, I love how this looks

It pains me to see that people are not taking the time to welcome you back or comment on your work, your one of the more prolific figures on this site, and its great that you take the time to share you works with us. For me its really inspiring as I'm just learning to paint and i've gone through many differnt transitions. This is a great painting, the face is stunning, you have never struggled with giving your faces life. I am confused where the towel and the hips meet, and the one leg looks a little weird to me, but I think its just how the light plays with the forshortening. A great work, and as for you other post, wow some great character designs, again its great to see you post again. :)

@ ramy: Thanks! It's a wierd angle, yeah. I wanted to try something else, and as the hips are the closest to the viewser, the upper thigh is pointing down to rest on the ground and this angle was tricky as it has a forshortening issue, hehe. Well, live and leard :)

@seeThrou: Wow, thanks for that warm welcome. I'm checking in here quite often, but I haven't posted anything in a while, hehe.

Interesting and pose of this figure. Her "towel" has more physical resemblance to a sheet than to a towel, many folds as depicted is rather difficult to achieve with a towel (too thick of a fabric). Great work on the tiles, giving them a granite creates a subtle coldness to the room as light just peeks through a window. Tile edges are imperfect as they should be for this type of tile work, also inclusion of the grout between tiles was a nice subtle touch.

Oh go on!... I'm sure Tascha wouldn't mind...

It's a nice painting - the fabric is particuarly good! I also noticed that leg issue - I think it's the lighting that's causing the problem - it's somehow confusing the perspective...

Great! (thumbup)

I think the thigh is too short regardless of the foreshortening. It's compounded by being so close to the edge of the "canvass." It almost feels like it's retreating -- like you were afraid it was going to go out of the picture. It's just the tension from the perspective, angle and placement that brings it out even more. Sometimes in order for a painting to "feel" right you need to exagerate the truth. I do it all the time when retouching photos. I know my art director, if this was a photo, would have asked me to lengthen her leg.

I find it very interesting that you painted the background last. I've always been told not to do that. I'm glad to see that someone else can do it successfully.

I think overall, it's a wonderful piece.

Hello there henning.
Nice to see new work from you - I must say that I really like the concept of this one. The colorpalette and folds are truely great done and I also am very much in love with the lightning.

Only small crit would be the anatomy around her chest, but other than that its perfect :)

I think this is a great painting with some flaws.
The upper half is brilliant, but moving downwards there
is a slight decline of quality visible, most noticably in the brushstrokes.
Also, moving downwards the style gets different, less painterly and more airbrushy.

The foldings are amazing, I love the floor too.
The image as a whole does not entirly work for me, it's slightly
confusing and your eyes are wandering over the image to take
it all in.
Also the cropping is too tight, would have preferred the whole
body visible

Allright,

to sum it up the image is brilliant on several parts, but
lacks punch as a whole.

amazing work! I'm glad you didnt stick with an entirely monocromatic piece.

the sunlight helps so much! I think it gives it a greater atmosphere and feeling.

wonderful painting as always... you are a photoshop painting master in my book!

beautiful work...
IMO the butt crack (excuse my french) shouldn't be seen, since its in the back. This way you might be able to fix the perspective...

Sensational work. It takes a LOT of talent and great imagination to come up with a work like that..... (thumbup)

Excellent work! The lower part of the body (hips, legs) look too small compared to the upper part though. It may be due to the perspective but it looks off. Well done anyways!

Nice.
The legs're off. - something wrong with perspective there
And I don't like the compo - why did you crop the legs like this? And her right hand?
Cool fabric and floor texture!
I have to tell you - I see that you work very hard and I admire workaholics like you:) but some of your images doesn't seem "alive" for me..I think it's because of photos that you're using.. - they kinda bounding you,I think you should dare more - you obviously have techniq for this. I commented this painting cause the girl seemes more "alive" for me than some other of your characters and I like it, and I believe you can add more life's sparkle at your characters.
Sorry if I'm being too hard:)

Martin777: The "short" leg is a result of a failed forshortening issue. It actually looks like this on my reference photo as well, as the hip if facing the viewer, and the leg is dropping towards the floor making us looking at it from an angle, which I didin't quite manage to look real enough. At least I learned something
